Custom's Formalities and Limitations

A “Passenger" is any individual passing the state borderline of the Republic of Bulgaria. Upon crossing the state borderline of the Republic of Bulgaria passengers may import and export commodities that in type, quantities, and value are not of a commercial nature. These do not include objects the passenger carry for personal use and consumption objects.

Passengers have the right to import at no custom duty or import fees the objects necessary to the foreign individuals for their stay in the country, which in their type and quantity correspond to both purpose and the duration of their stay, as well as consumption objects:
-Tobacco products /passengers over 16 years of age/ - cigarettes - 200 items, or other tobacco products - 250 gr.;
-Alcoholic beverages /passengers over 16 years of age/ - wine - 2 litres, and alcoholic liquors - 1 litre;
Other drinks: coffee - 500 gr., or coffee extract - 200 gr., tea - 100 gr., or tea extract - 40 gr.;
-Perfumes - 50 ml. and toilet water - 0,250 ml.

Passengers who are under full 16 years of age are not entitled to duty-free import of the commodities listed above, except for medications.

Passenger older than 16 can import duty-free commodities acquired abroad other than the listed above at a total value up to USD 100 or the equivalent in other currency units. For passengers under 16 the duty-free import rate for commodities acquired abroad is USD 50 or their equivalent in other currency units.

Personal use objects, new and used, which a passenger may normally need during one's trip, taking into account all circumstances of the travel, are placed under the regime of temporary import with a full exemption of all customs dues. Re-exporting personal belongings cannot take place later than the moment when the natural person who has imported them is leaving the customs territory of the Republic of Bulgaria.

Conditions for visiting Bulgaria with pets

Import of single pets /cats, dogs, birds etc./ with the travellers is permitted without permission by Bulgarian National Veterinary Service. In this case the duty inspector needs original veterinary certificate /veterinary passport/ issued by official veterinarian from the country of origin.

Conditions for visiting Bulgaria with a vehicle, registered outside the Bulgarian territory

Here is the information on the use of temporary admission regime for road vehicles by foreign nationals sojourning on the customs territory of the Republic of Bulgaria as tourists, for educational or other purposes.

According to the Bulgarian customs legislation, road vehicles registered outside the customs territory of Bulgaria in the name of foreign entities and used by foreign natural persons for temporary entry into that territory /without staying permanently in it/, may be placed under customs regime for temporary admission provided that these will be used for personal purposes by those individuals, within a certain period not exceeding 6 months, and then re-exported.

Temporary importation of vehicles and trailers, intended for personal use by foreign natural persons residing in the country for a period not longer than 3 months, or transiting through the country, shall be allowed after being listed in the cross-border travel document with which the person enters the country, or in another pertinent document. Securing the import customs duties, Value Added Tax /VAT/ and excise duties /when the commodity is subject to excise levying/ is not re-quired.

Foreign natural persons sojourning in the Republic of Bulgaria for more than 3 months are eligible to temporally import road vehicles and trailers for private use. For that purpose, it is mandatory that a customs declaration be filed and the import customs duties, VAT and excise /if applicable/ be secured.
